THE ARK ROYAL'S ADVENTURES

LONDON, TO-DAY.

H.M.S. ARK ROYAL, BRITAIN'S NEWEST AIR- CRAFT-CARRIER, WHICH THE GERMANS CLAIMED LAST YEAR TO HAVE BOMBED AND SUNK, HAS NOW RETURNED HOME AFTER A FIVE MONTHS CRUISE OF WAR SERVICE. During that time it is estimated Ark Royal, with her aircraft, reconnoitred five million square miles .of ocean. She has played a part in the inter- ception of three valuable German merchant ships. Her aircraft have attacked several U- boats while others have been frightened into crash dives with unknown results. On the other hand, Ark Royal has been missed by two torpedoes fired by a U-boat which was quickly sunk by her destroyer escort, while a 1,000-lb. bomb dropped from an attacking Heinkel crash- ed harmlessly into the sea fifteen feet away from her bows.

Only damage sustained by the ship was a few pieces of broken crockery Ark Royal has returned home to re- plenish her stores and 'give the crew. of sailors and airmen a well deserved leave, while she is prepared for her riext task.

"I saw it falling and from bridge my impression was wasn't going to hit us. It landed in the sea about 15 feet from the ship's side but if it had hit us it wouldn't have sunk us."
