RETICENT SUMNER WELLES AT NO. 10

London, To-day. MR. SUMNER WELLES, U.S. Under-Secretary of State, drove to the American Embassy yesterday morning, and received the press at noon. He smiled at his own reticence in answering ques- tions by over 100 journalists, and emphasised he was in Europe on a fact-finding tour in order to report to President Roosevelt. Secondly, any views given him by members to governments he had soon were absolutely consolutely confidental and solely for Mr. Roosevelt.

London, To-day. Questioned at a press reception about

a report that he had previously told friends that the Allies would find it

difficult to defeat Germany, Mr. Sum- ner Welles emphatically stated he had never expressed such views to any- body.

In reply to other questions, Mr. Welles denied that he had any pro- posals to make or any comment to of- fer on behalf of his Government, and insisted on the fact that he was in Europe solely to gather Information.

He added that he would leave Lon- don on Thursday for Paris and Rome and that he was expecting to see Signor Mussolini again.

According to present plans, Mr. Welles would leave Naples on March 19 for the United States.-Havas.
