WEAKNESS IN THIRD STRING OF Y.M.C.A.

(By “ADREM”)

BIG BADMINTON result of this week, of course, was the defeat of Chinese "Y" by University "A", which makes a play-off for the senior title a virtual certainty.

GOLF STARTING TIMES

This match was covered fairly fully in Tuesday's issues and I do not pro- pose to devote a great deal more space to it. A few reflections, however, may not be out of place.

It

It is true that University were forced all the way in securing their win, whereas most followers of badminton thought that they would win easily on their own court. must be borne in mind, however, that Uni- versity were without K. L. Yong, who must rank only second, to P. K..Hui in their team. This necessitated changes in their line-up that might have been fatal, and left them with a completely, inexperienced player to make up-numbers and, in consequence, A third string unable-to-win a single game.

Against a well-balanced team like Chinese "Y" this might have, weighed the balance but fortunately for University, Hul and Chew combined like veterans and their three games proved the deciding factor.

On a neutral court, and with Yong back in the team, I feel fairly certain in my own

CHAMPIONSHIP

EASY WINS FOR AU AND WONG

(By "ADREM!)

The mixed doubles fixture between L. A. Carvalho and Miss M. Ribeiro, and K. L. Yong and Miss U. Khoo in the Open Mixed Doubles badminton championship having been postponed, only two senior singles games were played last night, both of them not occupying an hour.

First game was extremely brief. In it Patrick H. Wong, former title-holder, prov- ed far too good for C. K. Cheah and won practically as he liked, the score being 15-2, 15-ő,

Other match was

far more interesting id although David Kwok was not in the same class as C.' Au, his plucky efforts and gallant retrieving of impossible situations, made for some speedy rallies.

In the first game Kwok was unable to clear deeply enough with the result that Au was able to dictate terms. The Chinese “Y** player, whose pace and direction,, dé-. layed until the last possible moment, had his opponent on the wrong foot for most of the time, made, very few mistakes`· and went out easily, at 15-4
