NAZI PROPAGANDA CONTRADICTIONS

London, To-day.

THE USUAL MONTHLY review of Nazi propagan- da the sixth of the war - was given by a spe- cial BBC Commentator yesterday. During the period under comment, there had been two speeches from Hitler, one from Goering and a pathetic one from Goebbels himself.

From the Nazi point of view, the trouble with these speeches was that they did not get enough at- tention. But people tended to say that the con- tent of the speeches was "just the same old thing." On the other hand, there was modicum of information in the speeches, if one looked at them in the right way.

Take Hitler's speech on January 31.|ing his job in the British Legation at He started off, as usual, with an attack Peiping.

He had on the Treaty of Versailles. nothing new to say, so he said the same things again. That, of course, is just the point. There was nothing else for him to talk about,

He was trying to persuade the Ger- man people and he and his gangsters were really protecting them against British and French attempts to des- troy the German nation. He was try- ing to prove that white is black.

a

BREST-LITOVSK

Under that Treaty, he said, the peace-makers carved up Europe with out regard to the wishes of the popu- lations concerned. That, of course, is Poles The lie.

Czechs, Finns, Balkan and

states had pro- claimed their own independence be- fore the peace conference met. Where the desires of the population were not clear, plebiscites were held.

In view of the anniversary of the signing of the Brest-Litovsk treaty, it was interesting to note what the Ger- mans did under similar circumstances. Under that treaty, Germany took from Russia 34 per cent of her population, 32 per cent of her agricultural land, 54 per cent of her international un- dertakings and 89 per cent of her mines. If now the Germany of Hitler could dictate terms, one could judge what would be the result from the fate of Czechoslovakia and Poland.

In his speech, Hitler went on to try and prove that the Allies wanted to destroy Germany (the BBC Commen- tator continued.) The first thing he did was to call them hypocrites--that was just the usual German abuse.

PEIPING LETTER

This was a private letter. to his mother, in which he gave his views on the political situation. They were not very wise views and the young man was not very well informed. He felt strongly about the fact that we were at war again and said that the German nation should be persecuted.

"PROOF"

The Nazis got hold of that letter, opened it and published it widely, claiming that it came from a respon- sible British diplomat. They splashed it in their press, broadcast it over the air and really played it up in a big way for two or three days..

Why? Because Hitler had said that the British were trying to destroy Germany, and the Nazi propagandists had to do everything they could to "prove" that he had spoken the truth.

One might say that the young man's letter was not very convincing proof, but it is difficult to be convincing when one tries to prove that white. is black. and It is difficult enough for Hitler even harder for the others.

The BBC has often broadcast ac- Poles, counts of persecutions of the getting its information from such re- liable sources as the Vatican City radio.

The Nazis immediately launched counter-charges against the Poles, ac- cusing them of atrocities" against the Germans. The number of Germans said to have been killed by the Poles rose from 5,000 to 50,000 overnight.

GOERING BLUNDER

over-

On February 10, Goebbels stepped himself. He said that these figures were only the conclusion to an orgy of violence and destruction last- He then said that Mr. Churchill hading for over 20 years. But two years said that he wanted to destroy Ger- many. That was a lie; Mr. Churchill never said anything of the sort, and Mr. Chamberlain and Lord Halifax have again and again `said, with the complete support of all, that the Allies do not desire the destruction of Ger-

many.

Hitler can only speak once in a while; the Propaganda Ministry, how- ever, keeps the torch burning every day. Some people might have heard the German press and radio comment on a letter written from a young man learn-

ago, Hitler stated that he had reached an agreement with Poland which re- moved all friction and made it pos- sible for them to work in co-amity!

Goering proceeded to follow Goeb- bels up by making a big blunder himself,

In his "morale-boosting" speech of February 15, he told Ger- man workers that they would have 1,000,000 Poles working for them, and that 10,000 had already come from Poland:

Goering, however, forget that a few
