INTEREST IN LEAGUE BADMINTON FALLING OFF? Very Little Progress Made In Last Few Weeks

ST. ANDREW'S FINEST WIN FOR SOME YEARS

WHEN

(By "ADREM”)

HEN I mentioned some weeks ago that badminton this season had been conducted most satisfactorily, with the maximum co-operation of all clubs concerned, I am afraid that I was being rather too optimistic.

In recent weeks not more than a handful of League games have been played and, I might say, not all the par- ties which took the initiative in postponing had any justi- flable reason, such as Camps, for doing so.

I would again appeal to clubs to get a move on; especially those clubs, in Junior Division, which have a chance of coming out on top. If these clubs postpone because they may happen to have one of their regular players un- available, how then can they expect their more lowly brethren in the Lea- gue table to carry on when they have no incentive other than the game it- self for doing so.

"'Y,"

Until University and Chinese

only teams in Senior Division concerned with the championship, meet, it will not be possible to forecast the champions. Both sides have done very well and, with the fading out of Recreio, it is certain that the shield will go to one or the other.

Junior Division becomes more and more Interesting. At the moment there fewer than four teams in the running.

NO UNBEATEN TEAM Until Wednesday, the odds appeared to be overwhelmingly in favour of St. John's, but their unexpected defcat places A different complexion on the matter.

There now remains no unbeaten team. St. John's, Recrelo, and St. Teresa's have all lost once, while King's, who started off with a bang to win their first four games in de- cisive fashion, have lost twice but are still interested.

I mentioned yesterday that I considered the strange line-up of St. John's as being responsible for their defeat and I think the St. John's captain will be the first to support this view.

In the absence of Peter Wilson, who was performing at the Charity Ball, Dick May- nard was brought into the team.

Now- Maynard, although he played very pluckily on Wednesday and brought of some shots which must have surprised even him- self, is not a championship player, and Beavan, despite being fairly well equipped in the matter of the smash and the drive, is not nearly as effective away as he is on his. home court.

Having regard, therefore to the balance of St. Andrew's, the obvious line-up to have adopted would have been Eardley and Bea van, the Kwok brothers, and Norman Smith and Maynard.

I understand that there is a possibility that Eardley and Smith will be entering for the Colony doubles championship together so their desire to accustom themselves to

and they did virtually as they liked in all really let himself go with his smashing and their games. The former Shanghai player he hit harder overhead than I have seen him do in previous matches.

KWOKS HAVE TOO MUCH TO DO Frank Kwok and Beavan at times were court for the greater part of all three games brilliant. Kwok covered the rear of The and was worked to death. stages he showed signs of tiring and his usually sound game suffered in consequence.

In the later

Beavan's nest stroke was his mash but his lob service proved ineffective on a court over which obstacles abounded.

David Kwok was another who took far more upon himself than he was physically capable and although his deadly smash was much in evidence in the early stages, he was unable to bring it into operation in his last two games during which he made inls takes he rarely makes normally.

For the winners Guest and Bliss did all that was expected of them in winning their first game but they did not do too well thereafter.

Brown and Gillies were in great form, except in their game against Eardley and Smith. Gillies smashed well when the op portunities presented themselves, while Brown excelled at cleverly-disguised shots,

drop

Kew did most of the work in the Fincher- Kew combination for the simple reason that the opposition concentrated on him. He was not nearly as good as he was last season. is drop-shots have lost their crisp accur- acy, his mash is no more effective and he is much slower about the court. Fincher

was shaky in the early stages but got going. especially in his final game, when his smash and clever angle-shots

Won most of the points.

St. Andrew's, can- now be expected to do much better in their remaining fixtures. although one thing is certain-no other team will under-rate them.

BADMINTON PAIRINGS

Following are leading pairings in

each other's play is understandable. Bul "B" division of the Badminton why split up the Kwoks? I have little doubt | League:~ that playing together the brothers would have won at least two games, if not three, and that was all that was needed.

The deed's done now and it is no use St. John's crying over spilt milk. They have been taught by experience that however weak the opposition might appear-and St. Andrew's is a team that should never be taken lightly-it is not policy to approach a game too confidently,

INTERESTING GAMES

As for the badminton itself on Wednesday, it was generally on the slow side but there were some exceptionally interesting games, which, with the ever-present prospect of a¦ major upset, kept interest glowingly alive.

St. Andrew's got away to a flying start when Brown and Gillies beat F. Kwok and Beavan, and Bliss and Guest had much the better of their game with D. Kwok and Maynard.

Eardley and Smith, playing brilliantly, stopped the rot with a crushing win over Kew and Fincher. Two St. John's victories

in the next round saw the teams start the final round all-square and it all depended on the ability of Brown and Gilles to beat Kwok and Maynard. They did and the game was virtually over as Kew and Fincher were considered certain to beat Kwok and Beavan. And so it transpired for St. An- drew's to secure one of their finest wins for

yearn.
