Mr. T. J. Gould, assistant crown solicitor, prosecuted, assisted by In- spector Hopkins, while the defence was conducted by Mr. H. W. Lee, instructed by Mr. J. M. d'Almada Remedios.
The jury was composed of Messrs. C. A. Goldenberg (foreman) Lam Ho-yin, Lee Chung-yew, Chin Peng- hong, J. Krogh-Moc, D. P. Furtes und Paul Lee.
Asked if he had anything to say before sentence was passed, accused said that he had been attacked by robbers and that the Police could verify that on enquiries.
Mr. Gould said that accused had no previous record and Mr. Lee said that he had been employed on the ship for the past four years.
The Chief Justice said that, from the evidence, the opinion he himself
hud formed and which he was then able to disclose was the same as that of the jury. Accused was the victim and not the aggressor but he had used a dangerous weapon in a dangerous manner. In this case he would give what in the circumstances appeared to be a light sentence.

A party of sailors from Newfound- lund, some of many who have joined the Royal Navy, are spending a few days leave in London and had an un- expected meeting with Mrs. Neville Chamberlain yesterday morning.

The party formed two "ranks and as the Prime Minister's wife approach- ed one of their number called them to attention.
Mrs. Chamberlain spent nearly 20 minutes chatting with the men, who heartily cheered her as she stood on the doorstop of No. 10 before they left. Reuter.

GERMANS
STRIPPING BOHEMIA
(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")
London, To-day. The impending abolition of customs barriers between Germany and the Protector- ate of Bohemia and Moravia will be accompanied by the introduction of the Reichs- mark into the Czech regions and the closure of the Czech Bank of issue.
City quarters point out that this means that the Reich wishes to dis- pose entirely of the Czech natural
resources.
Heretofore, the Czechs were allow- ed to develop their own export trade, and signed commercial treaties with Rumania and some Scandinavian na- tions.
The German-Czech customs union will enable the Reich to take over the fulfillment of these agreements to the detriment of the Czechs. - Havas.
