At first she said it was absurd and could not be done. He argued, and she realised that she wanted a break in the cruise. It must have been that which made her agree.
"Let's be tourists,” she said at last. "There's so much fun to be got there. We might perhaps pay a flying visit to California."
A crazy notion, but she felt crazy. She left all the arrangements to him. For once she was taking the acquies- cent role. She was agreeing because she found it the line of least resis- tance. If Jim had only written, if she had only had a line from him, it would have been só different. When a man tires of his wife it leaves her cold and heartsore. That was how she felt. She dare not think of Val.

VERNACULAR SCHOOL SPEECH DAY
Mr. Li Tse-fong distributed the prizes at the Government. Vernacular School for Boys this morning on the eve of break-up for the Chinese New Year holidays.
Mr. Y. P. Law, Mr. P. K. Kwok, Mr. Fung Ping-wah, Mr. Fung Ping- fan, Mr. Kwang Tse-ming and Dr. Au Tai-yuen were among those pre-
sent.
Mr. Li Tse-fong, in a brief speech, remarked that the school was unique in that its curriculum is balanced be- tween Chinese and English. What was more worthy of praise, he said, was that Chinese, the mother tongue of all the boys, was being employed as the medium of Instruction for practically all subjects in the lower classes. This coincided with the view he had always held, that Chinese should be more commonly used for teaching in the lower classes of an Anglo-Chinese School.

I guessed you'd come here to-night. If you hadn't, I was going to go on board to find you. I thought it was about time you and I had a talk.”
"I can't bear much more," she said, and then, quite helplessly, "do please help me.”
He glanced at Hugo. He said. "This looks like one of those occasions when three is n crowd.”
"Agreed, but who is the third? Looks to me as if you happened to be that man."
"This is my wife."
Hugo smiled. "It was unfortunate meeting you here, but that can't be helped. The only thing you can do now is ..
Marion laid her hand on his arm. "Please, Hugo, don't you see this is the end? It was the end really before | I saw him; when you wrote in the book. Be brave enough to recognise it."
Then she turned away, leaving the men to settle it. Ten minutes later Jim came to her and linked her arm, in his. "Let's go and have something to eat, Marion. I'm starving."
She wanted to go home, and yet she realised that when it came to going home, she would be afraid. What to do next was the everlasting question. They drove to the hotel in the dim hour before New York lights up. She could hardly believe that she was seiz- They sat down in the restaurant to- ing life by the forelock, doing some- gether. Isn't it her whole existence?" He had been right.
It was a shock to find it the same hotel. Twenty-three years had changed it a great deal, but it was the same threshold she had crossed as a bride. More dazzling, more modern, more luxurious, but the same place.
"Why did we come here?" she ask- ed, as they went through the hall.
"It's a good hotel. Not too small, not too big; you'll like it."
An over-blonde girl held out a book. She watched Hugo as he poised the pen. For a moment his eyes met hers; they were the eyes of a man on the highest point of adventure. Then he wrote. She saw the words, 'Mr. and Mrs. Johnstone.' The black and white letters brought her up with a jerk. The whole cruise had been un- real, ever since Colombo, ever since he had asked her to marry him. It was highly essential for a Chinese student to have case and correctness in the use of his own language, 35 one of his important missions to-day was to bring his mother country into closer contact with Western learning and sciences. In order to achieve this end he must, first of all, have a clear and thorough perception of the Chin- ese language so as to be able to im- part his knowledge of Western learn- ing and sciences to his own country- men in his own language.
He agreed with the Headmaster's remark that a youth could not be con- sidered properly educated if his educn- tion fell short of a cultural and moral basis as the guiding principle in life. In the world we live to-day, it was only right that we should place our full faith in the final triumph of cul- ture and morality.
