NAZIS TAKE PRIDE IN MURDER RAIDS ON MERCHANTMEN

London, To-day.

IT IS NOW CLEAR THAT Nazi claims to have runk seven armed British merchantmen in Tuesday's raids are entirely false.

No armed merchantmen or patrol vessels were sunk or destroyed. One or two defenceless ships and fishing smacks were the victims of the raiders, who dropped 20 bombs. The R.A.F. shot one raider down off the Northumberland coast and put the rear gun of another out of action off the Firth of Forth.

seemingly asking permission to aban- don ship, but the skipper "remained obdurate."

The first bomb whistled into the sea almost at the ship's stern. As the 'plane came over the second time, doom overtook the ship. A 500-lb. bomb hit the ship, covering the deck with wreckage.

The bridge was torn away and a number of men were flung into the sea. The airmen saw about 10 floundering in the sea, seemingly afraid of being sucked down by the ship as she sank.

BOILERS BURST

Fire from the burst bollers swept the decks, driving before them four men who were trying, to launch two of the lifeboats. The ship was help- less, wallowed for a few moments, and then sank.

The Nazi newspapers do not say what became of the defenceless sea- men. Reuter.

FOUR VESSELS SUNK

With reference to the German claim to have successfully....bombed one French and four British steamers off the East Coast on Tuesday, Reu- ter learns that confirmation has been received of the sinkling of four vos- sels but there is no confirmation of the sinking of the steamer, "Rum- geni," mentioned In the German communique,

As evidence of Canada's increasing pace in the war effort, It is announced that the Canadian War Supply. Board last week placed orders totalling $15,- 500,000-the largest orders placed in any week since the beginning of the

The purchases marked the start of Canada's shipbuilding programme with $13,000,000 for anti-submarine vessels.
