SKIPPER'S RIFLE DUEL WITH PLANE

London, To-day.

One man is dead and an- other wounded as the result of enemy action against the Newcastle steamer Gripfast, which arrived off a north- east coast harbour last night.

One of her lifeboats was hanging from one end of the davits and a shore lifeboat is now searching for the other lifeboats. The Gripfast was

damaged.

Capt. Prince, Master of the Hartle- pool steamer Otterpool, lay on his back on the bridge with a rifle to his shoulder and fired on 1 Heinkel bomber cach time it swooped to at- tack him off the coast of Angus.

DECKS RAKED

The steamer was armed with a de- fensive gun but the two gunners were wounded as they ran to their stations.

The German plane dropped ten bombs and raked the deck with ma- chinegun bullets. None of the bombs

hit the ship.

When three British fighters appear- ed the German plane immediately flew into the clouds.-Reuter.

AIR RAID IN FINLAND

Helsinki, To-day.

About 50 were killed and 200 injured in a Soviet air raid on Hangoe yesterday, while twenty were killed and 50 were wounded at Abo in a series of ralds; dozens of houses were destroyed.

The Soviet bombers silently swept down on the city with engines cut out.

The raids were the worst-Abo had hitherto suffered.

The British press attache Helsinki, Mr. Kenny, and the British vice-consul, Mr. Silander, were among those caught in the series of alarms which lasted from 9.45 a.m. till near- ly 4 p.m. Neither was injured.
