RUMANIA, GERMANY AND THE ALLIES

London, To-day. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS in the Rumanian oil problem are giving rise to incorrect reports re- garding discussions between the Allies and Ru- mania.

Reuter adds that the German Gov- ernment is Inviting the Balkan coun- tries to participate in negotiations with Bohemia and Moravia on a new basis.

HIGHER TAXES IN EGYPT

OWING TO THE BUDGET DE- FICIT THE GOVERNMENT HAS DECIDED TO INCREASE THE TEA DUTY BY EGYPTIAN £1:10:0 TO £8:10:0 PER 100 KILOGRAMMES. Excise duties will also be raised as follows: benzine 12 per cent; coffee 50 per cent: sugar 20 per cent; and bottled beers 800 per cent.

According to the newspaper "Mokat- tam" the Government requires Egyp- tian £7,000,000 to balance the Budget. Of this £2,000,000 will be taken from reserve and the remainder will be pro- duced by taxation, including the re- imposition of the cotton tax and an increase in income tax-Reuter.
