The majority of these people Germans, and the idea of being sent back to Hitler's Germany seems to All them with terror.
They are afraid to talk of Germany or its present rulers. They do not yet realise that they are in a free coun- try.
But their faces, and especially their eyes, betray them. They have a hunt- ed look.
Many of them could relate tales of misery and oppression tragedy In some cases but for the most part they are too afraid.
Not all of them, though.
There was food shortage in Ger- many before they got away, so some of them tell you. Very little meat or butter or eggs-malt coffee, and a deficiency in fats of all kinds.
"Flour soup" was a regular thing, and various articles of diet were severely rationed.
It is a curious revelation of Hitler- ism which makes these men and wo- men so anxious to stay in a country which is fighting their Fatherland.
Their sympathies are German. But they loathe Nazldom-many of them at least.
