After her handbag. with its con- tents, valued at $290, had been snatched, Mrs. Hast endeavoured to give chase, but lost them after a short distance.
The snatchers, however, ran into Granville Road, into the arms of a Chinese constable, who arrested one of them and found the bag in his | possession.
At the Kowloon Magistracy. this morning Chau Wing-ki, 17, was sen- tenced to six months' hard labour by Mr. E. Himsworth.

Some hundreds of Chinese re- fugees are reported to have crossed the Hong Kong border to return to their farms in Chinese territory. It is learned that several charita- ble organisations are assisting the refugees to rehabilitate them- selves.

It is announced that the Coun- cil of People Commissars has de- cided to contribute $10,000 for the relief of earthquake victims in Turkey.Reuter.
Over $10,000 worth of safety matches is believed to have been destroyed this morning when a fire broke out in the No. 10 Godown of the China Provident, Loan and Mortgage Company, Limited, at West Point.
Very little damage was done to the building, but the entire stocks of matches, some belonging to the Swedish Match Company, and to a Chinese firm, were damaged by fire and water.
The stocks were insured.
