FIRE IN APOSTOLIC CHANCERY

Rome, To-day.

A wing of the Apostolic Chancery was seriously dam- aged by fire on Sunday night.

The cupola of the Palace crashed in, but several art treasures were rescued and the fire brigade prevent- ed damage to the main building.

It is believed that a large recep- tion hall was also destroyed.

The Palace of the Chancery was built in the 15th Century, and was

Copenhagen, To-day. Press reports state that an important war council held in the Kremlin recently de- cided to continue the war against Finland.

Several members of the council ad- vocated acceptance of Finland's peace terms, but the majority insisted on the necessity of a mass offensive be- fore Finland has time to receive im- portant material assistance from abroad.

The increased Russlan military ac- tivity in Finland is attributed to the War Council's decision. Havas.

It is announced that Sir William Seeds, British Ambassador in Moscow, is coming to London on leave and will co-operate with Mr. William Strang, one-time chief British delegate to Moscow, in preparing publication of a White Book dealing with the Anglo- Franco-Russian negotiations. Havas.

Copenhagen, To-day.

The Tallinn correspondent of the "Poiltiken" reports that the Ogpu (the Soviet police) have ar- rested several foreigners in Mos- cow alleged to be German stud- ents.

The correspondent also reports that important detachments of the Ogpu's special detachments have been sent to Lening.ad and Mur- mansk.Havas.

Paris, To-day.

A French Admiralty communi- que states: "A French destroyer has saved the crew and 200 pas- sengers of the Spanish steamer Cabo San Antonio. Five are missing. The Chief of the Spanish General Staff was saved.”

The vessel, a 12,000-ton tran- sport, was howeward-bound from Buenos Aires and caught flic on December 29 when 5,000 miles from the Canary Islands.- --Havas.

Washington, To-day. The State Department--denies rumours that a new U.S. Ambas- sador is being appointed to Ber- lin. It is recalled that the Am- bassador, Mr. Hugh Wilson, was ordered to return to "report to the President on the situation” follow- in ing the anti-Semitic...excesses November last year.-Havas.

Washington, To-day. Counter-espionage measures are . being enforced and the State De- partment has ordered all Ameri- cans residing abroad to have their fingerprints taken as soon as pos- sible. Photostat copies of finger- prints will be sent to Washington and compared with registers there. -Havas.

Helsinki, To-day. Havas special correspondent yesterday visited the battlefield at Tolvajacrvi, where the Soviet troops were driven back 20 miles. While Tolvajnervi village is al- most intact. Aglajaervi has been practically razed.

The territory is littered with the corpses of Red soldiers killed by Finnish machinegun fire.

It is apparent that the Red tried a mass attack in this sector. Most of the corpses are those of young men who probably belonged to crack

of regiments composed members of the Communist youth organisation,

Havas saw over 30 destroyed tanks which still had the charred bodles of Red Army men inside. Several of the tanks were head- ing gast when destroyed, indicat- ing the Red retreat.

The corpses of emaciated horses can be seen near empty carts.

Thick snow is beginning to cov- er the battlefield, and the Finns are digging huge tombs for at least 1,000 corpses.—Havas.

Tientsin, To-day.

It is learned here that Lucien Ferrer, 10-year-old French Tien- tsin boy, has been awarded the Croix de Guerre with palms for gallantry in action on the western front.

Ferror, who volunteered late in 1938 In a colonial regiment in Paris, participated in a daring raid which resulted in the cap- ture of a German machine gun.-

Born in Tientsin on February 12, 1921 and educated at St. -Louis College-there, Ferrer-is-the- youngest son in a family of 14.
