THE ADMIRALTY STILL decline to name the Bri- tish battleship which was hit, but not sunk, by a German torpedo off the west coast of Scotland STOP PRESS yesterday.

No comment is made on the Nazi claim that the battleship was one of the Queen Elizabeth class. These ships consist of Queen Elizabeth, War- spite, Malaya, Valiant and Barham, all of which mount eight 15-inch guns, and are all modernis- ed ships from the Great War era.

at 2.12 yesterday afternoon, and merely stated:

"A torpedo attack has been made on a British battleship by a U-boat.

"Some damage was caused and three men killed.

"The next of kin of the casualties will be informed as soon as possible." It is learned in London that the torpedoed battleship is safe and is proceeding on her course. — Reuter.

Shanghai, To-day. The departure of the British Ambassador for Chungking has been postponed till to-morrow (Sunday). Reuter.

It is officially announced that the British battleship which was hit by a Nazi torpedo on Thurs- day afternoon has reached har- bour under her own steam.

The battleship is not seriously damaged, but one additional rat- ing is reported missing, believed killed, and another seriously in- jured.

This brings the total casualties to four missing, believed dead, and one seriously injured. Reuter.

That there is no immediate pros- pect of peace, and that the Ja- panese will make a final great at- tempt to crush Chinese resistance during the coming year, are the two principal expressions of opin- - ion made by competent Chinese observers here speculating on what the New Year has in store for China.

It is thought that Japanese cf- forts will be based on the follow- Ing lines of action:

Firstly, a drive from Hankow towards Canton, in order to com- plete the occupation of the Hân- kow-Canton rallway, with 'both columns effecting a Junction at Henyang, in south Hunan.

Secondly, a drive from north Hunan westward via Changtch, on the west shore of Tungting Lake.

Thirdly, a drive northward from Nanning towards Lluchow and Kwellin, in north Kwangsi,

Fourthly, a drive westward fron. Nanning towards the Wunnan border.

Fifthly, a drive westward Hankow

Ichang.

towards Shasi

Sixthly, a drive westward from Sinyang towards Siangying and Fancheng.

Seventhly, a drive from Shansi towards Slan, capital of Shensi.

It is believed, however, that none of these campaigns would be very earry, as strong Chinese

forces have been concentrated at key points in anticipation of any such possible moves.-Retrter.

The German Freedom Station announced last night that 77 per- sons are officially admitted to have been executed in Germany between the outbreak of war and Christmas.

The broadcast said: "Almost every day one person has fallen victim to Hitler's new decrees, which render even the most in- significant offenders liable to the death penalty, but the day if not far distant when we ourselves shall sit in judgment over the. crime the crime which Hiller has committed-and then neither he nor Goering and Goebbels will estape us." London, To-day. Speculation has arisen, says a naval correspondent, regarding the slight damage apparently caused to the British battleship struck by a torpedo.

In the last war the larger war ships were provided with torpedo gets of steel wire rigged out around the vessel. These were discarded because they wwre found too tumbrous in action.

Instead bulges were introduced and built in the sides of ships, so that a torpedo would explode out- side the real hull and the dam- nge would reduce the speed af the ship-by-only-one-knot-

It is therefore assumed, as the correspondent, that the bulges In the battleship have proved their efficacy as protection against torpedoes, and that the fabric and vital parts of the ship were not damaged.

Since the last war the develop- ment of bulges has advanced con-

siderably, and it is aimed that,
