Standard Of Badminton At King's Park Disappoints

Eardleys Not Settled Down To Local Conditions

RECREIO “A” HAVE LITTLE DIFFICULTY AGAINST ST. JOHN'S

(By "ADREM"}

THE THRILLING TUSSLE expected in the mixed dou- bles badminton match at King's Park last night between Recreio "A" and St. John's did not materialise and generally speaking the standard revealed was very low.

With the poor form shown by the Saints' second and third strings in the first round, there was never any doubt that Recreio would win what- ever the Eardleys managed to do on their own account.

At the end of the first round Recreio led 2-1, at the end of the second 4-2 and they eventually won 6-3,

of the

Tempo in the first game evening between the Eardleys and

J. J. Remedios and Miss. Olga Ribeiro was very slow, none of the players being able to settle down. In conse- quence there were numerous mis- takes, and, more being made by Recreio, chiefly on Remedios' smash- ing, Eardleys just managed to win after only being led on one occasio at 17-16.

POOR GAMES

Next two games were very poor, Oliveira and Miss Ribeiro completely outclassing David Kwok and Mrs. Wilson, and C. C. Pereira and Miss M. Silva easily beating Frank Kwok and Mrs. Strange.

Probably the finest encounter of the whole evening took place in the second round when David Kwok and Mrs. Wilson, showing considerable improvement, beat Pereira and Miss Sliva in a game featured by the length and speed of the rallies.

In the last round the visitors regis- tered only one success, the Eardleys beating Pereira and Miss Silva.

Finest male-player-of-the evening was Marcus Oliveiro, who revealed his best form in all three games. His smashing was particularly good and gave the opposition little chance of retrieving. Miss Ribeiro was the best lady.

EARDLEY FINE SMASH

· Eardley obviously has the strokes, notably a killing smash which he comes down on from a great height, and his short game is adequate but his greatest asset is his great reach. He has not the subtlety of the Uni-

versity players and still appears to

have difficulty with local lighting.

Miss Eardley also has the strokes but considering her experience in big badminton, her courtcraft and under- standing with her brother leave much to be desired.

At Taikoo, University had little difficulty in beating the home team, J. Clarke and Mrs. McBeattle being .the only Taikoo pair to extend them

at all.

At King's Park, Recrelo "A" beat St. John's by 6 games to 3.

fact

By BEST BALL There is no denying the that keeping the head still is one of the golfing fundamentals that must be learned if lower scores are to be made. Raising the head too soon on the downstroke throws the entire swing off its course and results in mishit shots. The correct method is shown above by three different positions in Jones' iron swing as he strokes through the ball. There is no difference apparent in the head position at any of these points; the swing has been made smooth- ly and freely underneath it.

player on The average

the other hand, in his anxiety to see where the ball is going, often ball raises his head before the has even been hit. This gives a body proportionate raise to the and arms with the clubhead be- ing pulled out of line. Make an effort to keep the head in a sta- tionary position on all shots no matter how strenuous the stroke. be In time improvement will noted and with it better shots. Tuesday.--Chip and Run,

CRICKET

LOCAL FREE FORESTERS TO PLAY

(By "ADREM")" :

There are three interesting senior games on this afternoon's cricket pro- gramme most notable being the first local appearance, to my recollection, of a Free Foresters team.

This team, which will be largely composed of Service cricketers, will meet Club in a two-day game arranged in lieu of the annual match with Navy, which has had to be can- called owing to the inability of the Sentor Service to raise a side.

Club have not yet announced their team but I understand Free Foresters will be re- presented by Col. Teversham. Major Ste- wart, Major Kirby, Capt. Man, Capt. Grose," Capt. Weedon, Capt. Skipworth, Capt. -God- by, Major Harvey, A. E. Perry and D. McLellan.

now

This is not a bad team by any means but I cannot see it beating Club at full strength,

Cralgengower,

they have sellied down, rather fancy themselves for any hon- ours that are going this season. They are evidently taking their game with Recrelo seriously this afternoon and have selected one of their strongest sides thus far this

season.

A. T. Lee is playing, as is George Winch. whose fine performances with the ball this year have brought him well-merited promo- tion.

Civil Service are entertaining X.C.C. on an adjoining ground but with McLellan and Perry playing at Chater Road, ɛhould have some difficulty in winning.

Among the Junior clubs Recreio entertain R.A.F., K.C.C. are at home to H.K.C.C. and Police will entertain Civil Service.
