JAPANESE DRIVE ENDS IN DISASTER

Chungking, To-day The Japanese attempt to reach the French Indo- China border by occupy- ing Lungchow and Chegn- nankwan has ended in disaster,

tc according Chinese reports received here.

These claim that in a big bat- tle in the vicinity of Yashuulang on the highway to the Indo-China border, south of Lungchow, Chinese forces, after 24 hours of desperate fighting, have driven the Japanese back.

The Japanese are reported to have lost over 1,000 dead and many more wounded.

The same despatches reveal that Japanese infantry, artillery and cavalry units moved to the south- west from Nanning over a week ago along the highway in the di- rection of Chengnankwan, via the towns of Suilu, Szeloh and Min- klang,

After reaching Minkiang, the Japanese column is said to have headed straight to the Indo-China border south of Lungchow.--Reu- ter.

reach

The opinion is expressed here that the Japanese desperate drive towards Lungchow is aimed partly to Chengnankwan, the important minus of the railway to Hanoi, also partly to draw the Chinese forces away from the attack on Nanning.
