ADMIRAL DARLAN'S MESSAGE TO THE FRENCH NAVY
(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL ”)
Paris, To-day. ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET Francois Darlan, Commander- in-Chief of the French Navy, has sent the following message to the Fleet:~ "After four months of war I take the opportunity of the coming New Year to express to the naval forces satis- faction at the results obtained through the Fleet's silent perseverance and high sense of duty.
OPERATIONS ON ALL CHINA FRONTS
Chungking, To-day.
The Chinese forces in Sui- yuan on Christmas Eve broke through the Japanese lines and reached the suburbs of Kweisui, capital of Suiyuan, where fighting is going on, according to Chin- ese reports.
After the occupation of Pantou by the Chinese on December 21, the Jap- anese troops at Tachingshan rushed reinforcements to the town, but the detachments were ambushed by the Chiriese.
"In close co-operation with the va- lant British Fleet we have assured the integrity of the maritime routes which link together the parts of the French Empire and which allow our country to rely on world resourceR thanks to the merchant marine, to which I am happy to pay tribute.
"I salute the memory of those dead on board warships or naval aircraft, and address to all of you best wishes and the assurance that I have not lost sight of the dan- gers which war conditions impose on so many.
"The sea defenders of our country
and civilisation must start this New Year with the certainty that moral forces are invincible and victory wil
crown our efforts."-Havas.
