Santiago de Chile, To-day. The German merchantman Dusseldorf (5,000 tons) has been sunk by a British warship.

The Chilean Government has instructed the warship Arauco to proceed to the spot and rescue survivors.

The Dusseldorf, owned by the North German Lloyd, left Val- paraiso on Wednesday evening.— Reuter.

The 62 British seamen 'on board the Graf von Spec have been landed in Montevideo. Some of them are from two merchantmen which have not previously been reported lost. They said that they counted 17 hits-Reu- ter.

Shanghai, To-day. The Settlement police were kept busy all day yesterday as a wave of rice riots swept over the city.

Twenty-one Chinese rice shops were looted in the Settlement and one in the French Concession, and there have been over 70 arrests, The extent of the loss suffered In by the shops is not known. many cases they were damaged during the rioting.

The police were most reluctant to use force on the rioters, the majority of whom were the poor- est class of men, women and children, but in some cases they fired into the air in order to dis- perse the crowds.

Most of the riots took place in the western district close to the outside roads area. Some of the riots are reported to have been or- ganised with a view to creating disturbances in the foreign areas. The price of first grade rice has declined a dollar, and is being sold at present at $42 a picul, while the price of second grade rice has decreased $2.-Reuter.

London, To-day. It is now learned that five Mes- in serschmidts were shot down the air attack on the German coast on Thursday.

Buenos Aires, To-day.. The Uruguayan Government, it is reported, has given the Graf Spee 72 hours in which to leave or be interned, according to Montevideo despatch.Router.
