THE THEFT OF THE HART RUBY

The Hart ruby was the most famous jewel in the lake section of England. It was the size of a walnut, had a rich crimson colour that was fairly dazzling in its brilliance and was well calculated to excite the envy and the cupidity of the world. This notable gem came into pro- minence about two decades ago when Sir William and Lady Hart gave 3 much-talked-about house party on their handsome estate near London. It was a seven-day party ending with a masquerade ball.

There were forty guests, some them closely related to royalty. After finishing dressing for the affair, Lady Hart dismissed her maid, who evidently needed a rest after a strenuous day's work.
