THE Army Football trials are proving rather more popular than usual with units this year and it seems that all likely material will be thoroughly sifted and that the final side selected will do the Army jus- tice.

From the number of names already received It is obvious that several trials will be necessary, and as soon as the closing date (9th December) for recommendations is passed the date will be decided on for the first. I should think it will probably be December 20, as it is bound to be mid- week in order not to interfere with League games.

Middlesex Nominations

Middlesex have submitted most names to date, all their present team being recommended. Of these I think Sheehan, Freshwater, Bright Wilkinson Pearson and Saw will al be fighting hard for a place and it is quite possible that all might get in.

A surprise omission from the Or- dnance list is Emberson, the Colony outside right. Although he is not particularly keen on playing I. un- derstand that if the Army need him particularly he will turn out. I ex- pect he will be asked as there is no one approaching his class on view at the moment. Other names on the

Munton, Coughlan and Rides, whilst Duffield. is also re- commended although I understood he had given up football.

The Royal Scots list is in and the only name I imagined would be sent In but which is not is Fraser. It may be that he has decided to cut out big games from now on. His partner Naysmith will be given a trial as will Falconer the centre half, I agree with the recommendation of Gordon, Hos- sack, and Fleming, but cannot see

what Munro has done this year to justify an Army trial.

R.A,M.C. have submitted six names, Pym, Smith, Garside, Bennett, Smith (A.D.C.) and Barnsley. Of these there are two with good chances, Garside impressed me very favourably earlier in the season with his display as a left half, but it was only in Third Division football and he might not be ready to step up into a higher class yet. Smith of course, is the present Kowloon goalkeeper in First Division and I imagine he will be between the sticks for Army this year.

EASTMAN'S GOOD YEAR

R.A.S.C. have, been optimistic and submitted seven names, most of which will obviously get on further than the first trial. There are three amongst them, however, who may do well; they are Hills, Glen and Martin. Hills I have commented on before and he is still showing great form, whilst Glen might be tried on the wing. Martin can play in any forward posi- tion. Another one of the Service Corps recommendations who has de- finitely a 'class' stamp on him but has not been too lucky

recently, is

Young, who plays at inside or outside

left.

Signals have also sent in a string of names rather out of proportion to a small unit, and amongst them is Cpl. Kennard as goalkeeper. He is quite a good custodian and with the present shortage of good keepers stands an even chance of getting # game. L/Cpl. Taylor is quite a good

back, but I have never considered either of them as being Army class.

Cpl. Husband is the only other of their selections who stands much of  chance and he is one of the more fortunate in that he plays at outside left which is also likely to be an awkward position to fill this year.
