ASTOUNDING GERMAN BROADCAST

(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")

Washington, To-day.

A sensation was created here when it was learnt that the Berlin radio last night announced that "the U.S.A. has prohibited all trade tran- sactions with Japan.'

It was also alleged that Senator Pittman had stated "the U.S.A. has given up hope of attaining peaceful relations with Japan."

The German allegation is sternly de- nied in Washington. The 1911 Treaty, it is pointed out, is still valid and the enforcement of an embargo against Japan requires a decision by Con- gress. Havas.

BIG ATTACK ON WESTERN FRONT

Paris, To-day. The first big infantry as- sault on the Western Front for some considerable time occurred yesterday in the re- gion to the east of the Moselle, near the Luxemburg border.

The Germans launched an attack in some force, but were repulsed with heavy loss.

At one time, the German and French forces were in close contact and hand grenades and bayonets came into play.

During the action, artillery of the heaviest calibre

into was brought play. Reuter.

Resolutions voted by meetings are almost identical-

ly worded:-

"If Finland persists in threatening our security and creating insane provocations, we are capable of defending our happy life and the integrity of our frontiers.

The Moscow radio announcer as- serted that the Finns do not want war | but that their Government has been bought over with French and British gold!

All this propaganda la possibly Influencing the Man In the Street, while political observers are won- dering why Russia's diminutive neighbour should be indulging in provocation.

It is pointed out that the "shells fell in Soviet territory" only affer a violent anti-Finnish press campaign best exemplified by the "Pravda's” editorial on Friday, in which the Finnish Prime Minister, M. Cajander, is called a "buffoon" 12 times.

should be free from the spirit of con-

quest.

Economic nationalism and the po- licy of autarchy, imposed on Europe by cruel necessity, will, it says, once the war is concluded, give way general trade development, bringing prosperity to the whole Continent.

But first of all, Europe must be freed from the spirit of conquest and brutality which Britain Iden- tifies with Hitlerism.

Other papers congratulate the Prime Minister on the tone of his statement, which entirely excluded the idea of hegemony and "did not allude to the League of Nations, which is obsolete."

The Soviet Baltic Fleet is taking part in the Moscow "war of nerves"-Havas. against Finland, according to reports from Stockholm.

The reports state that in addition to a naval "demonstration" in the Gulf of Finland, the skies over Soviet ter- ritory near the Finnish frontier have been "darkened" by squadron man- oeuvres.-Reuter.
