H-M-S. GIPSY HITS MINE; THRILLING SURVIVORS' STORY

London, To-day.

THE ADMIRALTY announce that the destroyer Gipsy struck a mine off the east coast yesterday and was subsequently beached. Twenty-one officers and men are reported to have

been injured, and about 40 ratings are missing. Just over 100 survivors were landed at an east coast

town by various vessels last night......

One rating, interviewed, said he was in the engine-room when the ex- plosion occurred, and the next min- ute he found himself in the water. He didn't know how he got there. He escaped with merely superficial wound on

the fore- head.

Berlin, To-day. The afficial Nazi news agency says: front watched the rescue by the "On the east bank of the Moselle, beams of searchlights.

The crowds were attracted to the shore by violent explosions, and saw vessels hurrying to the stricken ship which was already partly sub- merged.

The spirit of the survivors was amazing, an onlooker told Reuter, and they

came ashore singing and were wonderfully cheerful.

The survivors wore all kinds of clothing, including dressing-gowns and bathing-suits.

"BROKE IN HALF" Another onlooker said the vessel appeared to have been struck amid- ships and broke in half.

The irony of the disaster is that during the day H.M.8. Gipsy had rescued three German air. men found adrift In a rubber boat.

A few days previously Gipsy had. carried out another rescue, bringing in the crew of a ship which had been sunk in the North Sea. - Reuter.

SIX BRITISH AIRMEN JUMP FOR LIFE IN THE SHETLANDS

The German planes which raided the Shetlands yester- day first appeared over the area bombed by them nine days before.
