H.K. FUND PASSES
HALF MILLION MARK

The total of subscriptions re- ceived for credit of the British Fund for Relief of Distress in China, Hong Kong and South China Branch, has now passed the $500,000.
The actual total, as a result of donations received during this week is $500,150.30.
Substantial
contributions by local Chinese guids and trade associations are included in the latest list.
MEASURE TO CONTROL DESTITUTES
The "Gazette" contains the draft of an Ordinance to amend the Vagrancy Ordin-
ance.
The long title of the Vagrancy Or- dinance, 1897, is "An Ordinance to amend the law relating to vagrants."
The Ordinance however deals with "mendicants" as well as "vagrants"; and, as it is now intended to include provisions relating to "destitutes" who do not belong to the Colony and can- not prove that they are or have the status of British subjects, clause 2 of this Bill extends the long title of the Ordinance by the addition of the words "destitutes and mendicants" after the word "vagrants."
Although there is provision in the legislation of this Colony for the de- portation of destitute British sub- jects who do not belong to the Co- Jony, and also for the expulsion of immigrants who enter the Colony in contravention of the Immigration and Passports Ordinance, there is no provision except in the Emergency Regulations providing for the ex- pulsion of those aliens who are not required to have passports or travel papers, who do not belong by birth or residence to the Colony, who pass in freely whenever they desire, who are destitute and unable to find work and who therefore can look only to
HEAVY LOSS TO JUNK PIRATES
A SMALL FORTUNE IN CARGO AND MONEY WAS LOST BY CHAN MA-TSIM, 28, MASTER OF TRAD- ING JUNK NO. T1482H, WHEN HIS JUNK WAS PIRATED HALFWAY BETWEEN SWABUE. AND HONG KONG.
The cargo consisted of:
Copper coins, valued at $1,280;
Pigs, valued at $550;
Eggs valued at $900; and Wood-oll, valued at $880,
The incident occurred at 4 p.m. on Thursday when 'Chan's junk. was stopped by a large fishing junk,
Armed with revolvers and rifles, the pirates boarded Chan's boat and forced him and his crew into the hold after which they began transfer- ring the cargo to their junk.

At 1 a.m. Chan and his managed to smash the hatch. found that the pirates had sailed off, after cutting the mast.
Twelve hours later, the s.s. Wing Wah, passed by rescued Chan and his crew, and brought them to Hong Kong.
