SUPERIORITY OF SPITFIRE OVER MESSERSCHMIDT

London, To-day.

THE SUPERIORITY of the standard British fighter, the Spitfire, over the German standard single- seater fighter, the Messerschmidt 109, has been well-established in actions over the western

front.

Aerial battles have confirmed pre-war reports by Norwegian, Swiss and Spanish pilots that the Messerschmidt, though extremely fast, lacks manoeuvrability and stalls very easily.

the

These defects have been displayed in numerous combats in which Messerschmidt has been outclassed by the American-built Curtiss fighters of the French air force as well as by the Spitfire,

For example, there were two dog- fights on November 6, each between nine Messerschmidts and seven Cur- tiss fighters, which resulted in four German fighters being destroyed without any French losses.

The effect of the consciousness of inferior manoeuvrability on the pilot

is not to be under-estimated.

DANGER AT NIGHT

Regarding the German plane's lia- bility to stall, there is good reason to believe that German pilots are afraid to fly Messerschmidts at night.

It is certain that very few have in fact been flown at night.

The Spitfire, by contrast, is satisfactory in every way, Any type of German bomber com- ing within effective range of its eight machine-guns stands little chance survival-Reuter.
