BRILLIANT FRENCH AIR VICTORY

Paris, To-day.

ALLIED AIRCRAFT were extremely active yester- day, and the French war communique reports the biggest aerial battle of the war so far. Nine French machines attacked 27 Nazi aircraft and downed nine, seven of them in French terri- tory.

All the French planes returned safely..

British planes carried out another daylight reconnaissance over western Germany, and valuable photographs were taken. One of our planes has not returned.

French planes also flew deep into Germany and report no usual troop movements in the German rear.

Reuter, OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE An official communique states: "There was great aviation activity on both sides. During a violent air battle, in which nine French fighters attacked a group of 27 German fighters, nine of the German ma- chines were brought down, of which seven fell within French territory.

AMERICAN WARNING TO JAPAN

It was suggested in Wash- ington yesterday that Con- gress might continue its au- thority to exert economic pressure against Japan.

Senator Key Pittman, chairman of the Senate foreign affairs committee, stated that unless the Japanese at- titude improved before the expira-

tion of the trade treaty with the United States on January 26, they might place an embargo on any or all exports to Japan.

Japan's entire attitude in the China war, he said, was totally In disregard of the rights of the United States and other countries. The United States could retaliate against a wrong without going war. Reuter.

FLOATING MINES MENACE

Copenhagen, To-day. Denmark is having trouble with floating mines which have broken away from the Nazi minefields in the Baltic.

Thirty mines have been ashore on the east coast, and another washed 100 are reported to be in the Sound.

The Danish Ministry of Shipping has advised ships not to travel at night and to take great care by day. A number of mines exploded when they reached the coast and it is re- ported that their houses.-Reuter.
