ASKED TO ESCHEW "BARGAINS"
London, To-day.
REPLYING TO A QUESTION in the House of Com- mons asking for assurance that no agreement with Allied powers or others which might ham- per a just settlement at the end of the war would be made, Mr. R. A. Butler, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, said that it was not the Govern- ment intention to take any step which might pre- vent satisfaction being reached at the end of the war.
The Iraqi Government, he also said, had given for- mal assurances that the Mufti of Jerusalem, at present sheltering in Iraq, would not be permit- ted to engage in political activity or to be a cause of agitation.
Concerning China, he said that the| position remained unchanged. There had been no appreciable relaxation in anti-British agitation, but reports had just arrived stating that orders had |been given for it to cease.
Further representations had been addressed to the Japanese Gov- ernment by the British Ambassa- dor in Tokyo. There were no -important changes in Tientsin to
roport.
