ARMY RUGBY WIN WAS NO FLUKE

NOT

(By Serum-Half **)

OT for some years has the Club Rugby fifteen been as weak as it is at the moment, which, curiously enough, may be for the good of the game locally, Navy not being by any

ny means af full strength, Army being on a par with Club and Police showing improvement with every game.

is not going to be Club's first defeat of the Army's win by 16-10 was no fluke, and this season.

BRILLIANT THREEQUARTER

Paul is a bagful of tricks, being fast of the mark, possessing an unusual swerve and an excellent tackle. If he gets any support whatever he is going to make his presence felt against Army and Club. Stevens may play at threequarter, a position he equally well as full-back-and he is the fin- nus est full-back we have had here in years- and so complete the centre, positions. Ken-

Henderson, opposed to a comparatively new scrum-half, might have tried more on his own, but he was content to transfer to Cessford without the slightest delay. Cess-nedy is fast on the wing and has a safe pair ford played excellently at stand-off and with the use of the punt to touch more often when in defence he should improve his game even more. What I particularly like about Cessford is that he does not attempt to pass unless he can do so to advantage.

of hands, remarks which would also apply to Cochrane on the other wing. The half- backs are not as impressive, but they will undoubtedly improve after a few games to- gether. Pascoe filled the full-back without difficulty and can

In the pack, Taylor, Ogle and Johns were very prominent; especially Ogle,

Club have only a pack of average weight|sary. and the wing forwards must therefore lend their support in the tight scrums. This is my main objection to Richardson, whose place should be assured in view of his very fine place-kicking. Godfrey is not so guilty in this respect although he is by no means shoving all the time. The latter smothered Smith once or twice very effectively and Rave 0 rousing display in the loose and line-outs. result of this. Day was the only threequar. Salter hooked exceedingly well, and thatter to show any initiative. is about all that can be said of Club, for- wards, who badly lack punch.

I hope Douglas's injured elbow 18 not serious. His absence made a big difference to Army, though Waite did well at fly half and Pinkerton was quite at home in the threequarter line. Douglas is one of the few players here who uses the punt to ad vantage, conserving the energies of his back division and resting his forwards with ground-gaining kicks. Richards was again Army's best threequarter, though Boe was always dangerous in possession.

Lang looked very safe at full-back — he grassed Bosanquet in grand style the only time that player was able to elude Richards and his handling and positioning was sound. Smith, who took Lang's place at scrum-half for the Arst time, was obviously under a handicap, but he stuck to his un- playing enviable task with rare determination and should in time fill the position with credit, His service was a little wild at times but the reason for that was that Henderson gave trim little time to do anything in.

FINE ARMY PACK

Carruthers had a gruelling afternoon as full-back for Club, but he tackled well des→ pite the huge score of 34-3. His main fault, and it is a big one, is that he is a little too casual when waiting for the ball to bounce towards him or after he has flelded a high

An unusual incident occurred in this game. Navy were attacking on the open stand side and one of the Club forwards tackled Navy player not in possession who was go- ing on to secure a touch down from a kick ahead. This deliberate obstruction was pen- allsed, and quite rightly, with a free kick at goal from anywhere Navy desired. The result was a penalty goal in front of the posts by Paul.

to right and from right to left in the golf swing is still a matter of debate. Many golfers contend there is definitely. On the other hand no less an authority than Bobby Jones doubts that there is any noticeable switch in the weight. Watching one of the bet- ter golfers in action it would appear that there is a weight transference but this may be a mere optical illusion.

For example in the above illus- tration, the weight would seem to be largely on the right foot as the result of the body turn. Yet this appearance is deceptive for the golfer illustrated is Jones. Ob- viously, despite the appearance of relaxation, the left, toe bears its share of the weight. This creates a better balance yet allows the body to turn freely, smoothly and accurately throughout the stroke. Allowing the left ankle to turn inward to accommodate the turn is a great aid to relaxation. Wednesday
