COMPULSORY SERVICE IN AUSTRALIA

Canberra, To-day.

In connection with Mr. Man- zles' announcement yesterday that compulsory military service for mon 21 year old would be in- troduced, it is pointed out that this does not mean conscription, which Australia has always op- posed.

It is more a re-introduction of the territorial system which was In force 12 years ago.

It la rendered necessary by withdrawals Into reserve and for the need to maintain the militia at Its strength of 75,000 men.- Reuter,
