For nearly a fortnight, they say, there have been no spectacular' mili- į tary operations in North or Central Ja- China, where the Chinese and panese forces continue to face each other in "practically the same posi- tions they have been holding since the fall of Nanchang, capital of Kiangs! province, six months ago."

There has also been a noticable slackening in Japanese aerial activi- ties in all part of China.

The coffins will be covered with the German flag, and wreaths have been sent from officers and men of the R.A.F. and officers and men who took part in Monday's aerial battle.tive peace at present. Reuter.

The story of the "mad chase of

a supremely clever British pilot," as related by a German pilot, is told by the "Westfalische Landes- zeitung." The German, who claims to have shot down a Bri- tish reconnaissance plane, said the British pilot flying almost on the ground, used every small hill and house, even every slope, to obtain cover from his pursuer.

"It was such a crazy adventure that sometimes both of us were only two yards above the ground.

"The Englishman actually flew between trees and I was sure he was going to tear of the roofs of houses as he rushed past at 200 miles an hour,"

a

Finally, the plane fell into potato field and caused fire. The German said he saw three Eng- lishmen get clear. One of them waved to him' and shook his hands over his head as if to indicate that it had been a fair fight. Reuter.

The signature of the Anglo- French-Turkish pact is cordially received by the Press which stress its great importance for pence in the Mediterranean and pays tribute to Turkey's firm de- termination to stand by her en- gagements.

J

"The Times" says that the treaty is a diplomatic act of far- reaching importance which should be decisive in maintaining peace in the Mediterranean and should strengthen the ability of every State in South-East Europe to look after their own interests and combine them with those of their neighbours.

The pact has great diplomatic importance but the military con- sequences would be felt only in response to a challenge from out- side.

The "Daily Telegraphs" says: "It is easy to understand the per- sistent efforts of Nazi diplomacy to avert Turkey's signature. Tur key has an honourable reputation for Adelity to her plighted word that accounts for the extreme mor- tification of Berlin, where there is no pretence of sharing Russia's unresenting acceptance of the fact and intention to regard the nego- tiations with Turkey as only tem-. porarily suspended.

The News Chronicle" --states that the Balkan states may well find new strength and new cohe- sion as the result of the position taken up by Turkey.

The "Daily Mail" says that the pact slams the door on Hitler's ambitions" in South-East Europe. The balance of power in the Me- diterranean shifts in favour of the Allies. Reuter. !
