RIBBENTROP A RIOT!

London, To-day.

Herr von Ribbentrop, the Nazi Foreign Minister, and his wife were nearly mobbed in Berlin yesterday, accord- ing to a reliable report re- ceived via Paris.

It appears that they were attending a meeting of women at which Frau von Ribbentrop was to deliver an ad- dress on clothes in wartime.

One of the audience jumped up and shouted that Frau von 'Ribbentrop was too well dressed to talk to them on how to economise on clothes.

Other women said it was all very well for the Foreign Minis- ter's wife to talk on clothes when they had to be content with imi- tation dresEOS.

Containing the neutrality debate, Senator McCarran declared that if only President Roosevelt would not insist on repeal, he would be in strong position to mediate in Europe, .but if he insisted in changing the There are now 680 internees in this The meeting developed into a riot, status of the Country's neutrality country, and the number is likely to and the von Ribbentrops were escort- ed by detectives as they left the hall. -Reuter.

PAY TAX

Amsterdam, Oct. 15.

German residents in Holland have been requested by the German Lega- tion here to pay the fifty per cent. in- crease in income tax decreed in the Reich as a war surtax.

The following letter has been for- warded to German residents in this country by the German Minister: "The Fuehrer has decreed in Germany that the income tax will be increased by 50 per cent. as a supplementary war tax. It is our duty not to show less of a spirit of sacrifice than our fellow- countrymen in Germany, and to pay our share to the Winter Relief plus a sum equivalent to our share of the war tax.

The intensification of German pro- paganda in the Netherlands is being noted with deep concern by the press and by public opinion.

The staff of the German Legation has been increased to such an extent lately that new premises had to be rented since the outbreak of the war to make room for the new offices. The same thing, it is reported, has occurred in Brussels.—Havas.
