FINES IN ATTEMPTED BRIBE CASE

FINES OF $1,600 OR SIX MONTHS' HARD LABOUR. WERE IMPOSED ON BHUM KWONG-CHUNG, CON. TRACTOR, AND YEUNG TIN. CHEUNG, BY THE CHIEF JUSTICE AT THE CRIMINAL SESSIONS THIS MORNING, WHEN CHARGED WITH OFFERING A BRIBE OF THREE PER CENT. OF THE COST OF BUILDING HUTS IN ARGYLE STREET TO MR. R. P. SHAW, EX- ECUTIVE ENGINEER OF THE PUB. LIC WORKS DEPARTMENT,

The first defendant pleaded guilty. Second defendant was represented by Mr. Hing-shing Lo, instructed by Mr. J. Hall. The case for the prosecution was conducted by Mr. J. Prentiss, Assistant Crown Counsel.

These included 5,900 tons of copra, 2,000 tons of phosphates, 1,800 tons of coffee, 1,800 tons of lead and lead concentrates, 1,150 tons of steel scrap, 1,000 tons of manganese ore, 1,200 tons of miscellaneous ores and metals, 1,000 tons of rubber, 1,000 tons of palm oil, 1,000 tons of soya bean oil, 1,000 tons of other oils and fats, 1,000 tons of cereals, 350 tons of cotton and various quantities, of wool, silk, fibres, chemicals, tanning materials, hides and skins, foodstuffs, oilseeds, timber, gums and resins.

Mr. Shaw went through the list of au- thorised contractors and said that as they were not on the list, they could not tender. They were told what to do if they desired to be placed on the list. On September 19, they came again and Arst defendant produced a letter, which he handed to the other, who gave it to Mr. Shaw. The latter came to a clause where three per cent. of the contract price was men- tioned and asked to whom the per- centage was to be given. Second de- fendant replied that this was for Mr. Shaw.

This brings the total for the first six weeks of the war, up to 338,000 tons.-British Wireless.
