INDIAN POLICE IN GUN BATTLE ON BORDER

À “SKIRMISH“ BETWEEN an Indian Police Patrol and four robbers, armed with revolvers and one rifle, occurred at 3.15 a.m. to-day near the bor- der in Sheung Shui District, New Territories. The Police fired some 60 shots at the robbers who

replied by firing about 25 rounds.

There were no casualties among the four Indian constables and it is not known whether any of the robbers were hit.

At 2.40 a.m. the four men raided other in four houses one after the Sheung Shui Village, taking $69 in met by Chinese money. They were Detective (L.S.C. 304) So Hung, who fired six shots at the, men and then rushed to the Sheung Shui Police Station to report the incident. .

Presuming that the robbers would attempt to escape into Chinese terri- tory, a police patrol of Indian con- stables were sent out from Lo Wu to ambush them.

At 3.15 a.m. the patrol encountered four men, believed to be the same gang, at Liu Pok Gap.

An exchange of fire lasted about 15 minutes but the robbers escaped in an unknown direction.

Inspector Wright, who prosecuted, said that shortly after one o'clock this morning, the police reservist, who was in uniform, but was just off duty while having a meal at Tung Fong Cafe, No. 116, Temple Street, was called to act as an interpreter-when trouble started. between the Care and Roberts, who, after having a meal and a drink with a friend, wanted to sign a chit, which the Cafe refused to accept.

The trouble was settled after Roberts' friend had paid the bill. They then went out.

Later, however, when the police re- servist stepped out of the Cafe, he was attacked by Roberts, who using his fist, struck the complainant in the eyes.

Roberts alleged that, complainant accused him of attempting to defraud the Cafe.

JAPANESE DROP LEAFLETS

Turkey will close the Dardanelles to belligerent warships;

Russia will give assurances that she has no aggressive intentions towards Rumania.
