IT IS LEARNED THAT 23 neutral merchant ships]

have been sunk to date by German mines or submarines besides nine Swedish ships held at Goteborg on account of the danger of mines.. Germany may soon begin to question the wisdom of sinking neutrals because the great majority of ships sunk belonged to Scandinavian countries which are practically the only countries with which Germany is able to carry on sea trade..

Since the introduction of the con- voy system until October 10, 1,275 British and 47 Allied ships have been. safely convoyed to their destination. No convoyed ship has been sunk by an enemy submarine.
