THE ABSOLUTE AGREEMENT of the British and SAYRE

French Governments is stressed in semi-official comment on Mr. Chamberlain's speech.

It says that the declaration by Mr. Chamberlain in the House of Commons was made in a firm tone, different from the speech of the French Pre- mier,/M. Daladier.

The fact that Mr. speech was made after consultation with the Dominions shows the mans that any manoeuvre to disso- ciate the interests of the elements forming the Allied Front will more than ever be vain this time if German propaganda has recourse to it.

With her eyes half-closed to get :the "proper perspective," and her tiny wrist gracefully wielding the brush, Baby Sandy, Universal's 18-month-old screen star, does a bit of "touching up" on the por- tralt of her painted by Queen Holden, world famous Illustrator .of children's books. The portrait

Towards Health And Beauty

Truc beauty is not the result of skilful application of cosmetics, it is the symbol of vibrant health which is .only possible when the bodily func- tions are working regularly and nor-. mally. The most important essential to health is internal cleanliness, to ensure which an occasional dose of Pinkettes is usually all that is needed.

Lady Northcote will give an official dinner.

COMMERCE DEPARTMENT officials cannot see where Germany can draw heavily on abundant Russia for

war materials.

Reasons given are:

1. Germany hasn't the money to pay for them. 2. Russia does not have much surplus export. 3. Germany, even in peace times, could not make machinery deliveries, Russia's main need, on time.

Shrouded in mystery is the question Jore from Sweden out of her 222,000,000 whether Russia, for political reasons, marks of foreign iron ore purchases. will do without important goods In that year France sold her 38,000,000 herself in order to create surplus

a marks worth of ore. Spain and Spanish to ship to Germany on Morocco ordinarily supply an credit. Her non-aggression alliance

addi- does not call for that sort of treatment. Further, it is doubtful, as viewed here, does not call for that sort of treatment. whether it would be a smart thing for Russia to deprive her qwn economy of nécessities in order to help Germany.

SEVERAL DIFFICULTIES Even in peace times the above fac- tors steadily choked off trade between Germany and Russia. Germany lately made an effort to revive it by offering Russia a 200,000,000 mark credit. Russia agreed to take it out in ma- chinery and pay back over a seven- year period. In turn, Germany was to buy a corresponding amount of Rus- sian goods it needed.

But even if the agreement is carried out promptly and the exchange of goods effected, 200,000,000 marks is only about $80,000,000, a trifling su in International trade.

The difficulty lies in several direc- tions. Russia already has bought ex- tensively of German machinery during the past 12 years.

She has bought whole factories at a time. The first five-year plan in Russia was largely implemented by German machinery.

But machinery breeds machinery and in time Russia began to supply her own needs with- machinery she had bought. So her purchases fell off. For instance, în 1931 Russia bought $211,- 318,000 worth of German goods, pri- marfly textile mills, electrical and metallurgical plants, sugar and flour mills. In return Germany took pulp- inate the blood wood and lumber, oil, manganese ore,
