ployees for work in its branches.

After smashing down the doors, the Japanese are re- ported to have entered and searched the pre- mises and to have walked out with a quantity of stationary.

All the raiders were dressed in plain clothes. Twenty of them, who are armed, are now remaining in the building, and their intentions are not yet known.

A group of Japanese is reported to have inspected the building yesterday, saying that they wanted to lease the premises.

They were told that the bulld. Ing was used as living quarters by the bank's employees, who are working in branches in other parts of the Settlement and also the French Concession.

COOPERATION NOT SOUGHT

It is stated that the Japanese did not ask for the co-operation of either the British military, in whose defence sector the bank is situated, or of the Settlement police.

Since the evacuation of the Chinese in November, 1937, the Bank of Com- munications has transferred Its main activities to the French Concession and; has used the building only to accom- modate its staff.-Reuter..
