South Africa contains nearly all the metals and oils required by moderri industry, though only the more ac- cessible products are now being worked.

Mining products are exported as raw materials, the finished articles being mainly imported.

LARGE RESERVES

Among the base metals in South Africa are asbestos, chrome and man- ganese. There are large reserves of these, and also iron, copper, tin and vanadium.

The recent advance in technical skill will enable most of the problems of plant and equipment to be solved locally.

An estimate made two years ago placed the value of South Africa's untouched base minerals at over
