SINKING OF THE DUTCH STEAMER, BINNENDIJK
London, To-day.
THE CAPTAIN of the Holland-America Line 5.S. Binnendijk, 6,873 tons, which was sunk in the English Channel yesterday, reports that his ship was on her way to port for examination when there was a terrific explosion.
The engine and wireless were put out of action, and
the ship began to sink slowly.
Rocket signals were fired and these were answered. Not long afterwards, the examination ship came up, made fast to the sinking vessel and took off her 41 officers and crew, landing them at an English port.
Most of the crew were in. their bunks at the time.
Distress rockets attracted an exam- ination vessel which took off all crew, two of whom were injured, and are now in hospital.
Nothing was seen before the ex- plosion.
The Binnendijk was bound from New York to Amsterdam.-Reuter.
