"We were with a handful of British planes on re- connaissance above the Siegfried Line. Sud- denly enemy planes outnumbering us over three to one zoomed up beneath us firing as they

terrific duel began.

"I could hear bullets zipping through the fabric be-

side me.

I saw the observer crumpled in his seat shot through the head. The enemy were using incendiary bullets and I realised that it was only a question of time before the flames reached

me.

"Just as my clothing began to smoulder our attacker swooped up and offered a lovely target and

ADMIRALTY REPLIES TO RAEDER SUGGESTION

London, To-day.

The Admiralty yesterday issued a statement in con- nection with the Nazi warn- ing to Washington that the Iroquois would be sunk.

The attention of the Admiralty has been drawn to the suggestion that she will be sunk through a repetition of the circumstances which marked the loss of the Athenia,

The Athenia, the statement days, was, of course, sunk by a U-boat which was seen by responsible survivors. No British submarine was within several hundred miles of the scene.

The fact that such a suggestion should have been made by the Ger- man Government enables us once measure the again to realise and criminat mentality of the Nazi party leaders, but it is surprising that off- cers of the Imperial German Navy like Admiral Racder, the head of the German Navy, should unfortunately 'demean his uniform by lending, him- self to such baseness.-Reuter

CONVOY FOR IROQUOIS NOT A PRECEDENT

Washington, To-day. President Roosevelt announced yes- terday that he vas sending a Coast Guard cutter and destroyers to pro- tect the Iroquois, but this did not mean that other ships repatriating Americans would be given a convoy.

Thanks to the new North Atlantic neutrality patrol, the destroyers were well out in the Atlantic and could reach the Iroquois very quickly. Reuter.

It is believed that Mr. Raymond has been suspended for six months, and Mr. Tao for one month.

Such action was taken in connection with the Meeting held at Macao last Sunday.
