JAPAN'S DRIVE ON CHANGSHA

Shanghai, To-day. The Japanese drive on Changsha, capital of Hunan province, is meeting with stubborn resistance from the Chinese.

Chinese despatches from Chungking carry reports of numerous successes against the Japanese, while the Ja- panese military spokesman in Shang- hal admits that operations have reach- ed a "delicate stage."

He states: "Whether the Japanese will decide to take Changsha and oper- ate in that area cannot at present be disclosed."-Reuter.

JAPANESE CLAIM

Tokyo, To-day.

A "crushing blow" has been dealt by the Japanese forces to 14 of 42 divi- sions of Chinese troops in northern Hunan province, according to a com- munique.

Seven other Chinese divisions are stated to have sustained "heavy dam- age."

It is claimed the Chinese left 25,000 dead and 2,500 prisoners, while large amounts of war material were taken. -Reuter.
