YANGTSE GUNBOATS TO BE WITHDRAWN

The Japanese spearhead, centreing their attack on Takutsoao, east of Kiaoyouyleh, was hurled back by vigorous Chinese counter-attacks. Blunted and bewildered, the Japanese assault has now been mercilessly dis- sected with their mechanised units immobilised and heavy artillery thrown out of action.

Isolated Japanese units are clinging to several strongholds between Kiao- tauyleh and Chingtsin, which they had gained at heavy cost, waiting for reinforcements.

Some 7,000 Japanese, constitut- ing the main · Japanese force in the attack to the north-east of Changsha, have baan out off from their rear.

The increasing difficulties in Hunan as they advance on Changsha are ad- mitted in a Japanese broadcast which stated that it was the first time that they gained such meagre results at 'such heavy cost.
