GERMAN AIR ATTACK ON HOME FLEET BEATEN OFF
London, To-day. A BATTLE IN THE North Sea between units of the British Fleet and German aircraft was announc- ed in the House of Commons yesterday by the First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. Winston Chur- chill. Mr. A. V. Alexander (Labour) asked if Mr. Chur- chill had any statement to make on an an- nouncement by the German High Command that ships of the British Fleet had been attacked in the middle of the North Sea by German aircraft. Was there any truth, he enquired,' in the German claim that a British battleship had been damaged, an air- craft-carrier destroyed and that the German planes suffered no losses?
Mr. Churchill quoted a wireless Admiral Sir message received from Charles Forbes, Commander-in-Chief of the Home Fleet..
The message said: "Yesterday after- noon, in the middle of the North Sea, a squadron of our capital ships, ac- companied by an aircraft-carrier, cruisers and destroyers, was attacked by 20 German aeroplanes.
"None of the British vessels were
hit and we suffered no casualties. 150 MILES OFF NORWAY - "One · German flyingboat was brought down by anti-aircraft fire and another badly damaged. ·A· third German plane came down on the sea, and a destroyer picked up the ma- chine and the crew of four, who were taken prisoner."
