MINOR UPSET

The next event, Tweed Island Bay Han- dieap (first section) for "B" Class China ponies from the 1-1/2 Mile-Post, resulted in a minor upset. Carrying 160 lbs. Blue Ex press (Mr. C. Encarnacao) was made fav ourite with Hectic View (Mr. H. C. Pih) next, and once again a belated start was responsible for their downfall. Eve of Heaven (Mr. Hearne) was out of the gate in a flash with Jennifer (Mr. Proulx) many lengths. behind. followed by Expansion Time (Mr. Tao), Humdrum Eve (Mr. Fung) and the rest in a procession. Eve of Heaven was too far in front after round ing the bend, and, despite Mr. Proul's ef- fort on Jennifer, he could make no head way and had to admit defeat by six lengths. In the meantime a very interesting duel was being fought for third position. Hectic View, which suffered from a bad start com- ing up strongly over the last 100 yards ta challenge Humdrum Eve, but without avall, as Humdrum Eve just managed to pass the post a neck in front to pay a handsome dividend.

The sixth race, Gosford Handicap, "C" Class Australian ponies over a mile. provided yet another upset. A Great Time (Mr. Needa) was again made a hot fav ourite, but it let its backers down badly.

A Great Time took up the running from the start and, having established a com- manding lead, I really thought it was go ing to win, but it was unable to last. In the meantime Strathcarrick (Mr. Pih) was (Continued at foot of Column.)

It's the mellowness of BOOTH'S Dry Gin that makes it so much to be desired in cocktails. Such mellowness comes only from treble distillation and maturing in sherry casks and BOOTH'S DRY is the only GIN which receives such care in ite mak ing. It is not to be wondered at that the 1st prize Cocktail in the Inter- national Cocktail Competition, was made with Booth's Dry. THEY MIX REAL COCKTAILS WITH

BY BEST BALL Joyce Wethered possessed one of the most flawless of golf swings, when she was the reigning queen of the women golfers. At least that was the opinion of Bobby Jones, whose own swing was a picture of masculine grace and smoothness. Miss Wethered per- fected her stroke by constant pivoting in practice, with and without a club. The procedure. was a simple matter of imitating the body turn of the correct golf stroke, a matter which many golfers do not find so simple how-

ever.

soon

The fact that Miss Wethered persisted in her. efforts along or- thodox fundamental lines made her muscles, memory per- fect in the role. Her actual stroke in competition was certain, true. and efficient. While it is a little far fetched to expect, every golfer to emulated the former British champion's grace and performance, much can be accomplished by ap- plying the same practice tactics to one's own stroke. Concentrate on the foot action as illustrated above and you will find your body coordinating to the proper golf movement sequence. A club isn't always necessary, the.. pivot can be made without it, but perhaps it is necessary to subject ourselves to the punishment of an imaginary club to make us prac- tice in this fashion:

satisfied to lie second but when within strildng distance it came up strongly over the last quarter to pass A Great Time near the Public Stand and win by four lengths. Incidentally, it paid the highest dividend of the day, and also recorded its first win at the Valley. Amber II (Mr. Ip), which was not considered to have a chance in this

race came up surprisingly well to take third position, and paid its place-backers $87.00.

MR. HEARNE'S WIN
