WOODRING MESSAGE TO LEGION

Chicago, To-day.

The United States Secre- tary for War, Mr. Harry Woodring, has sent a mes- sage to the American Legion Convention at Chicago.

He says:

"Should war be forced upon us it will not find us unprepared as in 1916.

"I do not imply that wo are getting ready for war or are mo- billalng, but it is only a reasonable precaution to ensure that our rights are respected.

"I hate war and war-mongers the events in the Far East and Europe are a menace to our security.

"The menace to Democracy is to be found all over the world.”—Reuter.

SLOVAKIA REBELLIOUS

LONDON, TO-DAY. DECLARATION THAT THE PEOPLE OF SLOVAKIA SHARED THE IDEALS OF BRITAIN AND FRANCE, WAS MADE BY THE SLO- VAK CONSUL IN LONDON YES. TERDAY.

The Consul said: "The whole of our territory is under Nazi military occu- pation, and our voice is temporarily quiet under ruthless rule.

"I protest against this shameful betrayal by the Nazis of treaties and agreements.

"The aims of Britain and France are the same as those of our sorely tried people."-Reuter.

ROOSEVELT BACK IN WASHINGTON

Washington, To-day. President Roosevelt yesterday re- turned to Washington from his home at Hyde Park, where he had been attending his mother's 85th birthday celebrations.-Reuter.

Mr. E. M. Raymond, of No. 377, Re- pulse Bay Road, has reported the theft of clothing from his garden yesterday. The clothing was valued at $35.

London, To-day. THE DIPLOMATIC STRUGGLE in Eastern Europe is engaging the closest attention of all political observers, with the policies and stands of Italy and Soviet Russia as the two great question marks.

British political quarters, discussing the situation, declare that there can be only one end to the war, namely, victory for the Allies.

But, how long the war will last depends, to an ap- preciable extent, on the success of the Allies in the creation of an Eastern Anti-German Front. The Allies are now working hard

to build up this front, thus cutting off Germany's "Drang Nach Osten," but the policies being pursued by the Soviet and Italy in this connection remain to be clarified.

Mussolini is reported to have put out feelers in an attempt to conclude a non-aggression pact with - Turkey.

This stop may have been moti- vated by a desire to strengthen Italy's neutrality, or by a desire to weaken the Anglo-French attempts at creating Eastern Al- lee.

SOVIET'S ATTITUDE London Observers also point out that the Soviet Government's interest is identical with that of Rumania and. Turkey in seeing that Germany's push to the East is stopped, prevent- ing a German advance to the Mediter- ranean and the Black Sen.
