GREATEST CALAMITY
OF ALL, SAYS MR. CORDELL HULL
New York, To-day.
MR. CORDELL HULL, speaking at the celebrations in connection with Pan-American Day at the New York Fair, described the outbreak of war in Europe as “the greatest calamity of all." He added that the nations of the Americas, after having the shadow of a war in Asia for the past two years, were now feeling the effects of the great war in Europe.
It was their devout hope that the war now raging in Europe would not .extinguish the light, of that resplan-.
dent civilisation with which it had in. modern times illuminated the world.
In this tragic hour of trial it was their duty to keep the basic princi- ples of international relations alive and make the most intense and un- ceasing effort towards bringing about adherence to them throughout the :world.
MORAL INFLUENCE
Mr. Cordell Hull declared that each American republic was ready to de-. fend itself against any threat to its security that might come from part of the world.
any
At the same time it was the "unal- terable desire of each of their nations to remain at peace and exercise all the influence in their power towards the end that a just and enduring peace might become firmly established everywhere.
Referring to the assembly of repre- sentatives of all American Govern- ments at Panama for the purpose of taking measures necessary to safe- guard the peace of America, Mr. Cor- dell Hull, said that it was not enough by itself to give their nations, the full- est attainable measure of security with the progress of prosperity.
PEACE AND STABILITY Under modern conditions, peace and stability was not indivisable in the sense that a major breakdown of one or other in any portion of the globe inevitably affected the life of the whole world.
America's Secretary of State,
Mr. Cordell Hull.
