West opened the King of diamonds. Declarer won with dummy's Ace and discarded a low club. He now led a spade. East played the nine and Declarer the Jack. West won with the Queen, cashed his Ace of spades and led a low spade, which East
trumped.. East next played the King of clubs and continued with the Jack, West won with the Ace and played a small club. Once more East ruffed, and now, since West still had a trump trick, Declarer was down three tricks for a net loss of 700 points.

South complained of his tough luck, but we feel it wasn't tough luck so much as bad bidding. South had a Very found opening bid, and when his opponents bid diamonds, the suft in which he was vold, we don't blame him for rebidding. But instead of con- tauing on forever in hearts, in which after all he only held five cards, his first rebid should have taken the form of a taksent double.
If West had now bid three diamonds, North would have passed and South would also have passed. On the other hand, if West passed, North would have to bid two spades. Then if diamonds were bid again, South might have raised his partner to three spades. True, this contract could be doubled and set two tricks. On the other hand, we have a feeling that West would not have doubled it, but instead would have gone on to four diamonds, which incidentally he would have made. But, after all, part score is not worth 700 joints.

A A Q J 10 0 a The bidding: Schenken You 19 (7) ANSWER: Your correct bid is three clubs. A double will be for takeout; a notrump overcall will show balanced type of hand, while a pass is unlikely to trap the opponents since your clubs are too strong.
a
Score 100% for three clubs, 60% for pass (you can probably afford to bid clubs later), 0 for any other bid.
