km. per hour, they could not tako part in serious battles. But they could only develop their maximum speed when pursuing an enemy machine in a straight line. The increased speed of these machines revealed defects which could only be removed by a new and combined system of offensive and defensive.
In a fight properly socalled, their maximum speed was very rarely de- veloped, for the reason that this high- er speed hampered the operations of their fixed automatic machine guns to a considerable degree.
In addition to these disadvantages, there was the increased risk of colli- sion for the pilots frequently lout command of their machine. In the world war, the famous German pilot Boelcko lost his life through a colli- slon with a machine of his own de- tachment at a speed of 180 km. per hour. This danger has been increas- ed by the fact that the speed of these planes has been trebled. The casualty list has in fact increased in propor- tions on the Spanish front.

In many cases, the pilots of the so- called super pursuers are brought un- conscious to hospital after a flight; a maximum speed of 480 km. hour is generally more than enough for the physical resistance of a human being. And fights are not mere tour- ing excursions.
But there was also the question of the stability of the machines in a fight. The extraordinary speeds were achlev- ed at the cost of an extremely reduced weight. In many cases, an explosive bomb sufficed to destroy and to crash the machine.
new
But the higher speed of the planes has not contributed to an in- crease in the number of the decisive battles. Of the 694 air fights that took place in April and May 1917 be- tween German and French aircraft, 621 were a stalemate; only 73 battles

were decisive in any respect. proportion in Spain has hardly chang- ed; in six sharp air fights on the Ebro front between the 10th and the 20th October of last year, no more than a dozen machines were shot down. If the percentage of the socalled decisive battles had been increased, at least one of these six fights should have been decisive!
