WITHDRAWALS FROM THE BORDER

The military authorities have at last admitted that the Japanese forces are withdrawing from the border and that only a few remain.

Yesterday, a spokesman said that the Japanese forces have thinned down considerably right along the frontier, and they had heard, although they did not know for certain, that the Japanese were withdrawing from the Mirs Bay and Bias Bay areas.

Buckingham Palace has a new cook the Princess Elizabeth.

One afternoon when the Royal Family sat down to aftenoon tea a large plate of scones was placed on the "table.

After the King and Queen had eaten some, Princess Elizabeth turned to her father and said: "Daddy, do you like those scones?”

"They're very nice," her father' re- plied.

"Well, I baked them," cried Princess Elizabeth proudly.

Princess Elizabeth is allowed one the hour each week to go down to wonderful modern kitchens of the Palace and learn the art of cooking.

The Queen is so pleased with her daughter's progress that soon she will permit Princess Margaret Rose to take similar lessons.

The "China Mail" learns that the staff of the German Consulate in Hong Kong has not yet received any instructions from Berlin concerning the present situation.

Many members of the German com- munity have left for Macao, but a good many are remaining in the Colony.

Even at this hour, many local Ger- mans refuse to accept that a major conflagration in Europe is threatened.
