LAST RUN OF TWOPENNY TRAIN
London-A stage in the history of London's underground railways was marked recently when the last train
of the original type "tube"" made its last journey on the Central London' line. Both driver and conductor were veterans in the Underground service, and the train and Ipcomotive were near their fourth decade. One coach was actually in the train driven by King Edward VII when,' as: Prince of Wales, he opened the line in the year 1900.
What is now the Central London line was the first tube railway to be biult, and it was known colloquially as "The Twopenny Tube" because' 3d. was the flatrate fare for the whole or any part of the distance covered. It was sald at its opening that one was "blown in at one end and shot out at the other," all for twopence.
"
It seemed So strangely clean with its electric propulsion and light. To those who remember the old Inner Circle with its steam trains, oil lamps,, and sooty, sulphurous atmosphere, the tube seemed a marvel of comfort and cleanliness.
Now, London has a network of in- terconnecting tubes; the old elevators have given way to quickly-moving es- calators; the passenger can get his ticket from a row of automatic ma- chines; the latest rolling stock is the acme of comfort; station platforms are even now being lengthened to take longer trains; and tubes have been extended to serve districts which were open country when the old "twopen- ny" began its service.

The period to which the circlets are attributed is known to Swedish archaeologists as the Gold Age be- cause of the number of gold objects Į of similar date that have been found, but this discovery is remarkable be- cause of the amount of gold the cir- clets contain. Their fine workman- ship also adds to their value.
The ornaments were turned up -from-under a stone slab by the owner of a farm who may now claim the gold value of his find when it is hand- ed over to the State collections.
