It was strange to see the Yorkshiremen struggling for runs, and once the effects of the rol- ler had worn off the champions had a bad time. In just over half an hour five wickets fell.

THE weather ruined Ladies' Day at Canterbury, but 3000 enthusiasts who braved the blustering wind- driven showers saw Jim Smith com- plete his first century for Middlesex- against Kent. Middlesex totalled in 358, and Kent lost six wickets making 108 runs.

Smith reached three figures in seventy-nine minutes, and made 101 out of 121, while of 116 put on for the last wicket he claimed 98. He never resorted to wild indiscriminate slogging, yet four times he drove the ball over the ring, twice clearing the tents, and altogether he hit seven 6s and five 4s.

AN hour and three-quarters elaps- ed before Kent could start bat- ting, and Chalk was taken at slip off the seventh ball bowled, with a single scored. Allen mixed his pace considerably, and from another very fast delivery Ames was brilliantly caught at slip, Edrich holding the ball low and wide to his right with both hands.

n

Fagg batted well for eighty min- utes, and lost his wicket through Valentine delaying to call for single, when the ball went slowly to Smith at mid-off. Todd and Foster were out to consecutive balls, Kent finished 250 behind.

and

In his second spell Allen took three wickets in 23 balls for 5' runs, and altogether five, for 33..

WARWICKSHIRE began by losing Croom when they had only 3 runs on the board at Northampton.

Peter Smith drove well and also showed a straight bat in defence, so that at the tea interval the home side
