GORDON RICHARDS RIDES

THREE WINNERS

London, August 5.

GORDON RICHARDS delighted his many followers among holiday racegoers by winning three races at Lewes yesterday. They were Marlene gelding (8 to 1), Grecian Urn (9 to 2), and Taran (7 to 4).

These successes would recompense their back- ers for the unfavourable weather conditions. A thunderstorm broke over the course shortly after one o'clock, and was accompanied by heavy rain. Grecian Urn won the De Warrenne Handicap. The filly appeared to have the luck on her side, as Ugola, which was beaten by only a neck, was bad- ly drawn. Ugola had to be taken over to the centre of the course soon after the start, and made

up con- siderable ground in the last furlong. Ugola would probably have reversed the placings with Grecian Urn had there been a little further to go.

Gordon Richards and B. Carslake, who rode Grecian Urn and Ugola respectively, were both seen to fine advantage, and the finish gave the crowd plenty of thrills. Snow White secured third place on merit, as she was one of the leaders all the way. Beersheba started favourite, only to disappoint once more. She was in close touch with the leaders early on, without being able to produce the necessary finishing speed.

Diplome d'Honneur proved a run- away winner of the Members' Cup. He was bought cheaply in France, and this was his first victory. Mr. A. Parker made his effort on. Diplome d'Honneur soon after the field had turned into the straight. The six- year-old quickly began to forge ahead, and won with his ears pricked.

the hot corner. Nip Lum flied to left field to end and exciting and interest- ing tussle.

"Horseface" Douglas pulled a neat double killing when he caught Nip Lum's fly then slid to touch the initial sack before Choy could get back to the cushion.

CLUB'S HOLLOW VICTORY With the aid of five players from the U. S. S. Tulsa, Hong Kong Baseball Club finally won their first and only game this season by nosing Mindanao 5-4.

The game went an extra inning be- fore the issue was decided. Hoffman, of the Tulsa, pitching for the Molthen- men and Mockevicius for Mindanao had old fashioned duel on the mound with Hoffman, the victor. Both pit- chers fanned six and walked three, but Tony Mockevicius yielded 10 hits to Hoffman's 8.

The Hongkongites were one run behind at the end of the sixth. Min- danao tallied one more in the seventh, but Hongkong Baseball Club in their turn to bat evened the count 4-4 when Roger and Bellamy romped home on three hits.

Mindanao were blanked in the ex- tra inning. The winning run was scored by Leming on two hits and an error. Mindanao miscued three times' to he club's five.

Batting honours went to Douglas and Hoffman who connected for one three bagger apiece.

On Saturday next America will cross bats with Great Britain in the Final of the International series.
